Minnetonka City Council Advances Short-Term Rental Regulations

The Minnetonka City Council is taking steps to regulate short-term rentals within the community. On April 27, 2026, the council reviewed a draft ordinance aimed at establishing specific guidelines for these types of accommodations.

Under the proposed ordinance, all short-term rentals—defined as properties rented for less than 30 days—would be required to register with the city. Additionally, to qualify for registration, the property must be homesteaded, meaning it is the owner’s primary residence. This stipulation ensures that only homeowners who live on the premises can offer short-term rentals, either in part or in whole.

Currently, all rental properties in Minnetonka, regardless of the rental period’s duration, must be registered with the city. The new ordinance seeks to address the unique aspects of short-term rentals by implementing more tailored regulations.

The city is actively seeking feedback from residents on the proposed ordinance. Community members are encouraged to submit their comments through June 7. This input will be considered before the council finalizes the regulations.
