Minnetonka’s Commitment to Sustainability: A Community Effort

Minnetonka has long been recognized for its proactive approach to environmental stewardship. The city’s commitment is evident through various initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and preserving natural resources.

GreenStep Cities Program

Since 2013, Minnetonka has participated in the Minnesota GreenStep Cities program, a voluntary initiative designed to help cities achieve their sustainability and quality-of-life goals. In 2020, Minnetonka advanced to Step 5, the highest level, demonstrating improved sustainability metrics in areas such as buildings, lighting, transportation, renewable energy, and environmental management.

Solar Energy Initiatives

The city actively participates in Xcel Energy’s solar garden program, subscribing multiple city buildings, street lights, and water systems to receive solar energy from community solar gardens. This participation significantly reduces the city’s carbon footprint and results in substantial cost savings.

Climate Action and Adaptation Plan

In 2023, Minnetonka began developing a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan to prepare for the future impacts of climate change. Led by the Sustainability Commission and city staff, this project involved extensive community feedback and was completed after nearly a year of collaboration.

Community Involvement

Organizations like the Friends of Minnetonka Parks (FoMP) play a vital role in the city’s sustainability efforts. In 2025, FoMP volunteers dedicated 1,350 hours to restoration projects, participated in 176 events, and worked on restoring 58 acres within the city’s parks. Their efforts contribute significantly to reversing environmental degradation and fostering ecological stewardship.

Minnetonka’s dedication to sustainability is a collaborative effort involving city initiatives and active community participation. These combined efforts ensure the preservation and enhancement of the city’s natural environment for current and future generations.
