Minnetonka’s lakes and wetlands are vital to our community’s health and enjoyment. The city collaborates with four watershed districts to manage and protect these water resources:
- Bassett Creek Watershed District
- Minnehaha Creek Watershed District
- Nine Mile Creek Watershed District
- Riley Purgatory Bluff Creek Watershed District
One key focus is managing stormwater runoff to reduce pollutants entering our waters. Residents can contribute by:
- Directing downspouts toward lawns or vegetation to allow water absorption.
- Keeping paved surfaces clean to prevent contaminants from washing into streets.
- Avoiding applying fertilizers and herbicides before rain.
- Cleaning up pet waste to prevent bacteria from entering water bodies.
In winter, mindful use of de-icing salt is crucial. Overuse can harm aquatic life and pollute drinking water. Instead, consider:
- Shoveling snow promptly to prevent ice formation.
- Using sand or grit for traction when temperatures are too low for salt to be effective.
- Applying salt sparingly and sweeping up excess to prevent runoff.
Planting rain gardens can also help by filtering stormwater runoff. These gardens use native plants to absorb water and pollutants, enhancing water quality.
By adopting these practices, residents play a vital role in preserving Minnetonka’s water resources for future generations.
